New Urbanism has been around since the 1980’s, but with rising gas prices and rising obesity rates, New Urbanism is making head-lines (see the sidebar). According to the United States Department of Transportation, (www.bts.gov), in 2003 the average United States driver spent 26.8 minutes each way on his or her commute to work, for a total of 53.6 minutes or almost an hour per day sitting in your car. |
